Introducing Our New, Guided Metric Creation Experience featured image

Measuring the impact of your releases with metrics in LaunchDarkly

At LaunchDarkly, metrics are the foundation for data-driven decision-making because they help teams understand the real impact of their feature releases and experimentation efforts. Whether you’re managing feature flags in real time or running controlled experiments, metrics allow you to see what’s moving the needle—and what needs adjusting.

Metrics in LaunchDarkly are  insights into your users' experience that show you how changes affect engagement, conversions, and overall satisfaction. However, setting up the right metrics can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially for those just starting their journey with experimentation.

That’s why we’re excited to unveil our new, simplified metric creation flow, designed to make the process of defining metrics quick and easy.

What's new?

We’ve updated metric creation to be more intuitive and user-friendly. It all begins with a simple question: What do you want to measure? From there, you’ll see a guided flow, with prompts and explanations at each step, to ensure you’re setting up metrics that align with your goals.

Guided metric creation

We’ve also introduced a powerful type-ahead experience to select the right event key faster. As you type, suggestions instantly appear, helping you quickly locate the exact key you need—all without breaking your flow. Each suggestion is enriched with contextual details, such as when the event key was last seen, as well as the environments and contexts it applies to, so you can more confidently make selections at a glance.

The benefits: Why you’ll love the new metric creation flow

Our redesigned experience brings several key benefits:

  • Simplicity: Start with a high-level question and follow a guided, intuitive process to complete your metric configuration.
  • Speed: Set up metrics more quickly and efficiently. This is especially helpful for new or trial users who want to get started using metrics with confidence.
  • Accuracy: Get it right the first time with a type-ahead experience that gives you contextual information about your events, and guided prompts and definitions for each metric type.
  • Confidence: Better understand exactly what each metric represents and how it aligns with your broader goals.

Top examples of metrics in action

Here are some of the most impactful metrics our customers track:

  1. Conversion Rate – Track the percentage of users completing a desired action, like signing up or making a purchase. Conversion metrics help teams understand feature success, making it a powerful metric for experiments or feature rollouts.
  2. Engagement Frequency – Measure how often or within what timeframe users engage with a particular feature. Engagement metrics reveal the stickiness of features, highlighting what's keeping users returning and informing prioritization.
  3. Performance Metrics (e.g., latency or page load time) – Understand how new features affect site or app performance. Performance metrics are crucial for user satisfaction and directly impact engagement and retention.
  4. Revenue Impact (e.g., average order value) – Track revenue-related metrics, such as the average order value, to connect feature performance directly with business outcomes. Revenue metrics give a clear picture of how features affect the bottom line.
